Qualifications

I hold three degrees, two in Computer Science and one in Ancient History, all from the University of Manchester.

MPhil Computer Science

This was a one year research degree which was started as part of a three year PhD programme. Towards the end of the first year there were two options:

I decided before the end of the first year that I did not want to continue and was assessed for an MPhil. This was a personal decision as I was not enjoying the research and preferred to move into the private sector with a full time job.

The primary output, which formed my assessment, was a 32,000 word thesis entitled Human Centred Event Linking. The research also involved conducting three online experiments and analysing the results.

I successfully defended my thesis in a viva and only had to make minor corrections requested by the two examiners (this is standard - it is very unusual to have a thesis accepted with no corrections).

I received an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Doctoral Training Award to cover my fees and living expenses, as well as a recruitment payment and an additional sum for excellent academic achievement.

MA Ancient World Studies

Between my two computer science degrees, I spent a year pursuing a personal interest in the form of a taught masters degree in Classics and Ancient History. I applied for the course towards the end of my undergraduate degree and was given an unconditional offer.

I was assessed on the basis of two essays, a Latin exam, and a 13,000 word dissertation entitled Representation of Ancient Warfare in Modern Video Games. My dissertation has since been cited in peer-reviewed publications. I also gave a talk at a postgraduate conference (APCHC) in front of MA and PhD students and members of academic staff, and helped to organise another conference (AMPAL). I received a bursary to attend the Classical Association conference - the only MA student from Manchester to do so that year.

I was the postgraduate representative on the School's Student Staff Liaison Committee and also attended departmental meetings in the same capacity (the Department was one level above the School in the university hierarchy).

I now regularly give talks on Ancient History, the notes for which can be found at Ancient History UK. I also gives talks on Modern History, with the notes at Modern History UK.

BSc (Hons) Computer Science

My undergraduate degree was in Computer Science. I was assessed on a combination of coursework (laboratory exercises), exams and a final year project (software and report). I received a 2:1, also known as an Upper Second.

During my undergraduate degree I was a representative on the Student Staff Liaison Committee. I was involved in several student societies, including as Chairman, Treasurer, and Secretary.

At the end of my second and third years, I had summer jobs with a local engineering company (IPEC) and the University of Manchester.

Pre-university

Prior to university I obtained A levels in Mathematics, Computing, Law, and Economics, all at grade A (the highest available at the time). At GCSE my grades were: A* (Mathematics, Double Science, Business Studies), A (English Language, French, Religion, Electronics) and B (English Literature).
